Used Book Collection

This is a chance to trade in books that you’ve already read for books that you haven’t read yet. It is a great way to switch up your home library before the summer begins. Students should be reading all summer! Simply bring in gently used books that you no longer want and exchange them for a “ticket.” Teachers will get those tickets and the tickets can be used to get a “new to you” book May 29-30. Books should be appropriate for students in grades K-5 and be in good condition (covers, and minimum markings). 2 Used Books can be traded for 1 Ticket.

About Us

Sandy Ridge Visual and Performing Arts Elementary School

Since the beginning of time, the arts have been a staple among people of all societies. Durham is no different. Our town places high value on the arts and recognizes their importance in educating the whole child. Durham Public Schools is pleased to announce its newest school option – Sandy Ridge Elementary…

Sandy Ridge opened in August 2011. This elementary school centers on teaching and learning – providing strong instruction in the core curriculum, but with a focus on the visual and performing arts.

ARTS

SandyRidge_1Sandy Ridge features numerous arts-related learning activities to enhance the educational experience:

  • Multiple theater performances annually
  • Multiple choral music performances annually
  • Multiple art gallery walks annually
  • Regularly scheduled visiting professionals and artists
  • Regularly scheduled art-focused field trips
  • Extra-curricular activities – clubs, field trips, summer camp opportunities
  • Additional art, choral music, theater and dance teachers
  • Two daily enrichment classes allowing students to receive both foundational skill instruction, as well as integrated enrichment that brings the arts into the content areas
  • Regularly scheduled art-focused field trips

CURRICULUM INTEGRATION

While Sandy Ridge is known for its active and dynamic arts program, it is important to note that the core subjects of Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts are studied and measured with high expectations. By integrating the arts into every other curricular area students can experience a greater depth of understanding of the subject matter.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is an effort designed to improve educational outcomes for students by developing a set of common, voluntary, internationally-benchmarked academic standards in mathematics and English language arts. These standards will begin to be implemented in the Fall of 2012. For more information, please visit: http://www.pta.org/4446.htm

Significant Building Features

  1. 95,000 SF elementary school with a student capacity of 640.
  2. The project is registered with the US Green Building Council for LEED Silver Certification.  Some of the sustainable features include:
-- a. Light colored concrete at the bus driveway and parking area, and a light colored reflective roof finish will reduce the heat island effect of this new facility.
-- b. The two-story classroom wing for grades 2 through 5 reduced the overall site disturbance area.
-- c. Grass pavers reduce impervious area to improve the quality of water run-off from the site.
-- d. The building envelope will achieve the highest insulation value that reduces the size of mechanical equipment, and along with lighting and building automation controls, reduces overall energy consumption when compared with other schools of this size.
-- e. Each classroom has optimal natural daylighting and views to the outside.
  3. The site includes several nature trails intended to support learning opportunities about natural resources and preservation of plant species.  The site is directly adjacent to conservation land managed by the North Carolina Plant Conservation Program, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  The smooth coneflower, an endangered plant, is protected on this site.
  4. The building features a LEED recommended technology 'dashboard' in the main corridor that is intended to be an educational tool showing students the various aspects of building performance.  Interactive projection systems are provided in each classroom and in a computer lab.
  5. Because the site was formerly a tobacco farm with several building foundations remaining on the property, the building massing and design uses barn vernacular for inspiration (gable roof form, 'lean-to' canopies and field stone base) as its primary elements of design.

Construction Progress

  1. Site development commenced in May 2010; building construction followed in July 2010.
  2. The building will be ready for DPS in June 2011 to receive furniture, complete technology infrastructure, complete security systems and other owner-provided equipment.
  3. Scheduled final construction completion is July 15, 2011.
  4. MBE participation on this project is 15.62%.
